Republicans Need to Be Something More

The one thing that really stuck with me today from the hours of talking heads was something that George Will said. Well, really it was two things, what Will said and the fact that Nicolle Wallace is an idiot, but I digress. Now, for some reason I always find something meaningful  from him every week, but who can blame me? He’s a great writer and frames the debate in a very unique and convincing way.

Anyway, the thing he said was this: “The country is not saying ‘we like Republicans.’ They are saying ‘we don’t like the current agenda’ and the Republicans are standing there. They are the alternative.”

It shook me because I want more than anything for the Republicans to be MORE than just the other side of the aisle. I want badly Republicans to say something of substance other than NO. I want more than anything for Republicans to offer something to the American people that is substantial. Right now I feel as though they are simply saying “You know what? We don’t like what Obama is doing either. Vote us back in power and we’ll go back to the way things were.” It’s the argument that the Dems are using and it’s generally the argument that Republicans are using, just in different ways. I watched the Roundtable with the Congressional Leaders of both parties on Meet the Press. The Republicans flat out said nothing of substance. David Gregory keep hammering them, asking them what the Republicans would do differently. I hear no specifics. Again the questions came: Gregory: “Name a painful choice that Republicans are prepared to say we have to make?” Rep. Session, “First of all, we need to look at all we are spending in Washington…We will balance the budget…we want people to read the bills they are voting on [PS in the modern era, no one reads the bills, they all get memos]…we need to go back to the exact same agenda that empowers the free enterprise system rather than diminishes it.” Rep. Cornyn: “The President has a debt commission that reports Dec. 1st and we’d all like to see what they come back with…my hope is that they come back with some bi-partisan solutions…I think repeal and replace it [with healthcare]…the job killing agenda of this administration is the reason these people are sitting on the sidelines.” It’s sickening. WHERE ARE THE SOLUTIONS?! I want to evolve as a country and I want the Republicans to be more than the lesser of two evils. I hope my wishes come true, but I fear that I’m going to have to move to Disney.

Many are called; few are chosen. Fewer still get to do the choosing.
